LIVING WAGE STAGE
Veterans of the NZ ethnic/world music scene since 2002, in 2016 the Klezmer Rebs launched (at Newtown Community Centre!) their fourth full length CD Always a Pleasure and will be playing songs from it at the Newtown Festival. For their seventh (!) appearance at the Newtown Festival the staunchly political Klezmer Rebs welcome the opportunity to play on and support the kaupapa of the Living Wage stage.
The Klezmer Rebs pump out lively, ‘tuchas-shaking’ klezmer music from Eastern European Jewish-Yiddish culture, Sephardic Ladino songs, Russian folk tunes, Argentine Yiddish tangos and 1940s swing vocal songs plus quirky unique originals. Lively dance songs are mixed with poignant, slice of life stories from ‘the old country’.
The line-up features inspiring clarinettist Urs Signer, Rosemary O’Hara piano & vocals, Rob Edgecombe bass, Jonathan Dunn trombone, David Weinstein guitar mandolin & vocals, and Amanda Maclean helicon, accordion & percussion.
